माँ महागौरी माँ दुर्गा का आठवाँ स्वरूप हैं, जिनकी पूजा नवरात्रि के आठवें दिन, यानी महाअष्टमी को होती है। उनका रूप अत्यंत गौर, शांत और कोमल है। वे भक्तों के पाप धोकर उन्हें पवित्रता, सुख और शांति देती हैं।Maa Mahagauri is the eighth form of Maa Durga, worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri, Maha Ashtami. Her form is radiantly fair, calm and gentle. She washes away her devotees' sins and blesses them with purity, happiness and peace.

माँ महागौरी का वर्ण शंख, चंद्रमा और कुंद के फूल की तरह उज्ज्वल श्वेत है। वे श्वेत वस्त्र और श्वेत आभूषण धारण करती हैं, इसलिए उन्हें 'श्वेताम्बरधरा' कहा जाता है। वे वृषभ पर सवार हैं और उनकी चार भुजाएँ हैं। दाहिनी ओर का ऊपर वाला हाथ अभय मुद्रा में और नीचे वाले हाथ में त्रिशूल है। बाईं ओर के ऊपर वाले हाथ में डमरू और नीचे वाला हाथ वर मुद्रा में है। उनका भाव अत्यंत शांत और करुणा से भरा है।Maa Mahagauri's complexion is a brilliant white, like a conch, the moon and the kunda (jasmine) flower. She wears white garments and white ornaments, which is why she is called 'Shwetambardhara'. She rides a bull and has four arms. Her upper right hand shows the gesture of fearlessness and her lower right hand holds a trident. Her upper left hand holds a damru and her lower left hand is in the boon-giving gesture. Her expression is deeply calm and full of compassion.

कथाThe story
माँ महागौरी की कथाThe story of Maa Mahagauri
कथा के अनुसार माता पार्वती ने भगवान शिव को पति के रूप में पाने के लिए वर्षों तक कठोर तपस्या की। धूप, वर्षा, सर्दी और धूल सहते-सहते उनका शरीर काला पड़ गया।
उनकी तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने उन्हें पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार किया। फिर शिवजी ने गंगाजल से उनके शरीर को धोया, जिससे उनका शरीर बिजली की चमक की तरह अत्यंत गौर और कांतिमान हो गया। तभी से वे 'महागौरी' कहलाईं।
इसीलिए माँ महागौरी को तप, पवित्रता और शिव-शक्ति के मिलन का प्रतीक माना जाता है। मान्यता है कि उनकी उपासना से मन के दोष धुल जाते हैं और मनचाहा शुभ फल मिलता है।
According to the story, Mata Parvati performed severe penance for many years to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Enduring sun, rain, cold and dust, her body became dark.
Pleased with her penance, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife. He then washed her body with the waters of the Ganga, and her body became extremely fair and radiant, like a flash of lightning. From then on she was known as 'Mahagauri'.
That is why Maa Mahagauri is regarded as the symbol of penance, purity and the union of Shiva and Shakti. Devotees believe that worshipping her washes away the impurities of the mind and brings the auspicious results one longs for.

स्नान और संकल्पBath and sankalp
सुबह जल्दी स्नान करके साफ़ वस्त्र पहनें। सफ़ेद या हल्का गुलाबी रंग इस दिन शुभ माना जाता है। पूजा स्थान पर बैठकर महाअष्टमी पूजा का संकल्प लें।Bathe early and wear clean clothes. White or light pink is considered auspicious today. Sit at your puja place and take the sankalp for the Maha Ashtami puja.

कलश और अखंड ज्योतिKalash and akhand jyoti
स्थापित कलश को प्रणाम करें और अखंड ज्योति में घी या तेल डालें। नवरात्रि के अंत तक ज्योति को निरंतर जलाए रखें।Bow to the installed kalash and add ghee or oil to the akhand jyoti. Keep the flame burning without break until the end of Navratri.

पहले भगवान गणेश का पूजन करें। फिर कलश पर रोली, अक्षत, फूल चढ़ाकर सभी देवी-देवताओं का स्मरण करें।First worship Lord Ganesh. Then offer roli, akshat and flowers to the kalash and remember all the deities.

माँ की प्रतिमा या चित्र के सामने घी का दीपक जलाएँ। ध्यान मंत्र पढ़कर उनका आवाहन करें और सफ़ेद या लाल चुनरी अर्पित करें।Light a ghee lamp before Maa's image or picture. Invoke her by reciting the dhyan mantra and offer her a white or red chunri.

माँ को मोगरा या अन्य सफ़ेद फूल चढ़ाएँ। सुहागिन महिलाएँ माँ को सुहाग की सामग्री, जैसे चूड़ी, बिंदी और सिंदूर, भी अर्पित करती हैं।Offer Maa mogra or other white flowers. Married women also offer items of suhag, such as bangles, bindi and sindoor.

नारियल का भोगCoconut bhog
माँ महागौरी को नारियल या नारियल से बनी मिठाई का भोग लगाना प्रचलित है। कई परिवार इस दिन हलवा, पूरी और काले चने का भोग भी लगाते हैं।Offering coconut or coconut sweets to Maa Mahagauri is the common custom. Many families also offer halwa, puri and black chana on this day.

घी के दीपक या कपूर से माँ महागौरी की आरती करें। अंत में हाथ जोड़कर क्षमा प्रार्थना करें: 'आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम्। पूजां चैव न जानामि क्षम्यतां परमेश्वरि॥' पूजा में हुई किसी भी भूल के लिए माँ से क्षमा माँगें और प्रसाद बाँटें।Perform Maa Mahagauri's aarti with a ghee lamp or camphor. Finally, with folded hands, offer the prayer for forgiveness: 'Aavahanam na jaanaami na jaanaami visarjanam, poojaam chaiva na jaanaami kshamyataam parameshwari.' Ask the Mother to forgive any mistakes in the puja and distribute the prasad.
